monk meditating with eyes closed

What Monks Eat

was created alongside Buddhist Nuns and Monks to spread awareness of monastic living and to promote temple-style food preparation and recipes. After searching for vegan options aligned with the monastic culture, we decided to make our own. Many of the vegan and plant-based products on the market are produced in kitchens that prepare non-vegan options. Since we are committed to products that have no cross-contamination with animal products, we sought to create a brand dedicated to healthy, conscious, vegan cooking. We are committed to minimizing food waste, using fresh, non-processed ingredients, and removing overpowering flavors like onion or garlic to reduce lingering flavors. We take pride in using simple, fresh, nutritious ingredients to promote health and well-being. Unlike other brands, we use only premium ingredients and rely on traditional, time-intensive food preparation methods to ensure the highest quality products for you to enjoy. Frequently Asked Questions

How are the dumplings shipped?

Our dumplings are shipped frozen in environmentally-friendly, biodegradable trays made from corn. Trays are surrounded with biodegradable foam that can be dissolved in water for zero waste. We are still in the process of sourcing environmentally conscious shipping boxes and wrappings.

Is your kitchen 100% vegan?

Yes, that’s right. One-hundred percent. Our kitchen has zero cross-contamination with animal products. All of our products are prepared with kitchen equipment that only prepares vegan recipes. You can rest assured that you receive the highest quality dumplings made with care, tedious preparation, and no animal cruelty.

Why do you avoid certain flavor profiles?

In East Asian monastic culture, strong flavor profiles can detract from a mindful state. Flavors like garlic, onion, chives, or anything in the allium family tend to linger – which can distract the mind. We rely on light yet flavorful flavor profiles with a careful balance.

How do you minimize waste?

We minimize waste by using the entirety of our ingredients. Vegetable waste is used for broth or compost. Leftover water is saved and used in our garden. We’re the first to admit – we’re not perfect! While there’s always room to grow, we strive to be as close as possible to zero waste.

How do you choose your ingredients?

Ingredients are chosen with intention. Our choices are based on flavor and texture profiles and the health benefits they can offer. Each dish has a specific flavor and texture that we’re looking to achieve. We strive to create a mouthwatering dish while eliminating excess ingredients and overpowering flavors. Our top priority is also  considering how each ingredient affects our body, health, and overall well-being.
